Best Time to Trek Larkya Pass

Autumn (September to November) – Best

This is the most popular time to trek. After the rainy season the sky is clear and you can see great mountain views. The weather is stable and the temperature is comfortable during the day. Nights can be cold at high altitude but with good gear it’s manageable. You’ll also see colorful forests and local festivals like Dashain and Tihar.

Spring (March to May) – Second Best

Spring is also a great time to trek. The rhododendron forests bloom making the trail colorful. The days are longer so you have more time to walk and rest. There might still be some snow near the pass in March and April but it’s usually safe with proper planning.

Winter (December to February) – Very Cold and Risky

Only experienced trekkers should attempt Larkya La Pass in winter. It’s very cold and heavy snow can block the pass. Fewer tea houses are open and it’s hard to find services. Still the snowy views are amazing if you’re prepared for the cold.

Monsoon brings heavy rain, landslides and leeches in the lower areas. The trails are slippery and mountain views are often blocked by clouds. It’s not a safe or pleasant time to do this trek.

    Physical Challenge

The trek is moderate to difficult depending on your fitness. You’ll walk 6-8 hours a day on mountain trails. The day of crossing the pass is the hardest—you start very early and walk 8-10 hours often in snow or strong wind. There’s no technical climbing but you need to be fit and determined.

    High Altitude

The highest place to sleep is Dharmasala (4,460 meters). From there you climb to Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters. This high altitude can cause altitude sickness (AMS) with symptoms like headache, nausea and tiredness.

Take time to acclimatize especially in Samagaon and Samdo. Drink water, eat well and listen to your body.

    Who Should Do This Trek?

This trek is best for people who:

    • Are in good physical shape
    • Have done multi-day treks before
    • Are prepared for cold weather and long hiking days
    • Wants to do Manaslu Circuit Trek

You don’t need to be an expert but it helps to have experience with high altitudes. Even if it’s your first trek you can do it with good preparation and the help of a licensed guide.
