Best time to visit Bhutan
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the peak seasons, with clear Himalayan views and Bhutan’s great tshechu festivals — masked-dance celebrations in Paro each spring and Thimphu each autumn. Winter is cold, clear and quiet, when black-necked cranes winter in the Phobjikha valley, and the summer monsoon is the greenest, lowest-priced time of year.
Visas, the SDF and how it works
All international visitors need a visa arranged in advance through a tour operator, and travel inside Bhutan is by guided tour with a licensed Bhutanese guide, private vehicle and driver. Bhutan also charges a Sustainable Development Fee for each night of your stay — the fee that keeps the kingdom’s tourism low-impact. Getting there
Nearly all visitors fly into Paro International Airport — the dramatic approach between 5,000-metre ridges is an experience in itself. The most common connection is the short flight from Kathmandu, which makes Bhutan the natural extension of a Nepal trip: many of our guests pair a Nepal trek or a Kathmandu tour with a week in the kingdom.
